Uncover the Causes of a Coated Tongue

If you notice that your tongue is covered in white, you know that something is wrong. While this problem is rarely serious, you’ll want to learn the right ways to treat it and what caused your white tongue in the first place. Here are some common causes of a coated tongue:

Leukoplakia: People with leukoplakia find that the cells in their mouth grow faster than they’re shed. With so many cells covering the tongue, it gives the appearance of a coated tongue that’s covered in white patches. A coated tongue can simply be caused by irritation and the coating will subside as it heals. But since a white tongue is often the result of tobacco use, it may be an early indication of cancer, so have your dentist find out what’s causing your leukoplakia to ensure that there’s no cause for concern.

Oral Lichen Planus: Raised, lace-like white lines on your tongue may be a sign of oral lichen planus, which is an autoimmune disorder. The cause is unknown and the condition often subsides on its own. You can help to prevent this type of white tongue by avoiding tobacco and eating fewer foods that irritate your mouth.

Oral Thrush: This is an oral yeast infection called candidiasis. It appears as white, bumpy patches all over the tongue and mouth. It is often seen after the use of antibiotics that kill the beneficial bacteria in the mouth. This type of white tongue is also diagnosed in people with diabetes and weakened immune systems, as well as those taking steroids for lung disease or asthma. Infants, the elderly, and people who wear dentures experience the problem most frequently. Dentists advise eating yogurt with live and active cultures to restore proper pH in the mouth or taking medication to fight the infection. It often results from poor oral hygiene, which is why you should brush your tongue when you brush your teeth.

Remember to brush your tongue every time you brush your teeth. Why should you brush your tongue, you may wonder? Practicing good oral hygiene is the best prevention for a coated tongue, which includes brushing your teeth and tongue.
