From Impaction to Removal – All About Wisdom Teeth
If new teeth erupt in your late teens or early twenties, they’re probably wisdom teeth. Also called third molars, these teeth can be healthy for some people, but more often, they’re a source of pain and infection. Wisdom teeth pain may first be noticed when a tooth is attempting to erupt through gum tissue. If it coincides with swelling and general illness, the tooth may be infected. Impacted wisdom teeth occur when the third molars cannot fully erupt through the gums. In many cases, wisdom teeth removal is necessary.
Your dentist can take X-rays to determine the position and health of your wisdom teeth. If removal of a fully erupted wisdom tooth is indicated, it can be extracted like any other tooth. If you have impacted wisdom teeth, you may be referred to an oral surgeon.
Impacted wisdom teeth that are embedded in the jawbone are usually removed in small sections after an incision is made in the gums. Depending on how complex the procedure is, wisdom teeth removal may require oral sedatives, nitrous oxide, or even general anesthesia along with application of a local anesthetic.
After wisdom teeth removal, you may experience pain, swelling, or bleeding. Antibiotics may be prescribed to prevent infection. Biting down on a piece of gauze can help stop bleeding, ice may be applied to reduce facial swelling, and pain can be controlled with medications. You’ll probably need to adopt a liquid or soft food diet for several days while you recover. Follow all your dentist’s instructions carefully to get the best results.
Your mouth should be relatively comfortable within a week or two, but it may take several weeks or even months for complete healing to occur. Report any unusual, continuing, or worsening symptoms to your family dentistry specialist or oral surgeon promptly.
